Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.
Replay systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Players will gain the ability to challenge certain calls made by the official, mirroring the system already in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This move arrives only a season following the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review specific situations, including:
- If a ball has bounced twice.
- If a shot touched an rival's racket or person during play.
- Potential hindrance end of a rally.
Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of challenges a competitor can initiate.
A Recent Example
An illustrative case occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.
Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."
The umpire viewed a video and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its events.
Additional Innovations
A further change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.
This solves situations where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.
Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
