Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Key Part in the Ashes

Test match action

The Australian skipper has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

Australia's selection chief George Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's historic rivalry.

There were concerns that Cummins might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on November 21 in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of being involved.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and there are permutations at play, not only the back issue, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he's going to play a significant role. With luck starting in Perth. If not, we'll reassess."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand last month after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of three Australian summers in four years.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the national team for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "small issue and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the initial game as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games in any case. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
